Engine : Teardown.

Over the past few days, I have been dismantling the engine into it’s constituent parts.
Firstly, the Left hand side, where the clutch actuation worm drive has gone missing, (I’m pretty sure I robbed the one off this bike to replace the one in MY LC when it finally gave up the ghost.
there was much grease, oil, and road grit to remove from this side. Making it even half presentable, sufficient to separate the crankcases, took a few hours with paraffin and brushes, and then brake cleaner and kitchen roll.

Then the right hand side…
Well that’s a significant amount of “fur” under the pump cover.
Inside looks OK, although I have further affirmation of how treacly and black the gearbox oil is.
The clutch plates had welded themselves together, and when prized apart, the plain plates showed significant signs of corrosion.
This was bad enough that I didn’t want to clean them up and put them back in… A new set was ordered.

After the primary gear was removed from the end of the crank, I split the cases, and removed the gearbox and tacho drive… and every oil seal, ready to clean the cases.
I was going to send them away for cleaning, (vapour blasting), but by this time I have made such inroads into the filth that I thought I’d just give them a good scrub with fairy liquid, a squirt with the pressure washer, and save myself fifty quid.
