Pottering about – more carb parts

After attempting to pull the fork leg apart, and failing, I needed another quick look for the fork springs missing from the spare legs i found last week.

A further hour in the shed revealed no hidden springs, and a quick investigation into the viability of RD400 springs and XS500 springs yielded no positive results… (Too short and too wide respectively)

It was time to look under the workbench!

This was a task I had been avoiding, as the space under the workbench has been filled for the last 10 years with “Projects”. i.e. Broken things that I will one day get around to repairing. But needs must, so 3 hours of backbreaking (for a 60 year old), work, moving a KTM LC4 engine, an RD350LC engine, and multiple wheels around.

In the clear-out process, I found…

  • An old leather jacket
  • 4 million dead woodlice
  • What appears to be a Kawasaki H2 speedo
  • A KTM Duke2 rear subframe (needs welding)
  • Yamaha RD350LC footrest holder (Needs welding)
  • 350LC engine casing, (Needs welding)
  • KTM Duke2 exhaust silencers (Needs welding)
  • A box of assorted X7 spares
  • A box of assorted RD400 spares
  • A pair of 350LC carbs in somewhat poor condition
  • …more dead woodlice

…but no fork springs of any description.
Clearly I was going to have to buy some.

I washed the carbs as best I could in a parafin bath, but they are going to need professional cleaning if they are to be of any use other than spares.

Having pottered for a while, I supposed I should progress the Elsie rebuild a bit, so I cleaned up the brake torque arm with a wire brush, and gave it a coat of Bonda Primer,
